Part 2 >
One of the most common questions I was asked, both before and during the ride, was whether or not I ran into any threatening people and if I carried any type of protection. This makes sense, especially when being asked by city folk, as the ratio of mean people to nice people is significant; there is also the fact that we all think that backwoods people are dangerous – i.e. ‘Deliverance’. The fact is, after meeting hundreds of people on this trip, I only had two encounters were I truly felt threatened.

One of the final descents on my cross country trip on my Surly Long Haul Trucker. This is on Skyline Drive that winds through Shenandoah National Park in Northwestern Virginia. While not one of the fastest descents, it was pretty twisty through the middle section. With oncoming traffic, stone walls that might keep me from sliding off a cliff and slippery leaves on the road, this was one of the more exciting downhill blasts on this trip. Riding through tight turns like this on a loaded touring bike that only wants to go straight requires you to physically throw the bike around while remaining smooth so as not to upset the bike. It does not take much hesitation or misjudgment to get behind on the count, go wide on corner exit, and miss turning into the next corner – especially when you have never been on the road before.

They say getting started is the hardest part. I have been trying to decide how I wanted to kick this thing off for several days now. I have been procrastinating by sorting out my other pages and writing tidbits that I thought were profound, funny or at least interesting. At my stay at an old friend’s place in Beaverton, OR, his 11 year old daughter, Abby, wrote a poem for me to take with me on my trip. I can’t think of a better way to start my blog.
